How does steam cleaning work?
Steam cleaning is used to eliminate dirt and dust that cannot be removed from carpeting with an ordinary broom or vacuum cleaner. However, steam alone is not enough to clean the carpets completely. A detergent or similar chemical helps provide additional cleaning power.
The water and steam help loosen the dirt that has become trapped under the surface of the carpet. The detergent is activated by the extremely hot water. After the solution is able to soak into the carpet, the water and remaining detergent is extracted with a wet vac. As a result, this method of cleaning is often referred to as Hot Water Extraction.
Once all of the water is removed and the carpet dries completely, you can move furniture back into place and immediately resume using those areas.

While portable steam cleaners can be rented at many stores for carpet cleaning, these DIY machines tend to be less efficient than the professional-grade equipment. It may remove some dirt and dust, but it will not eliminate bacteria and tough dust mites. Professional carpet cleaners typically have high-powered, truck-mounted systems that can get the job in a shorter time with better results.
